Apple is holding a one-day sale on its UK website and in British stores on the day known in America as Black Friday.

Black Friday, despite the gloomy name, is a tradition in the US sales calendar that falls the day after Thanksgiving. This year Apple has extended the sale across the Atlantic.

In the UK Apple has christened the sale "a special one-day Apple shopping event".

Apple rarely offers discounts so this special one-day sale gives Apple customers a chance to pick up some bargains.

Prices on iPods have been cut, but only slightly. The new 8Gb iPod nano is down from £109 to £104, a saving of only £5. The new 13-inch MacBook has been reduced from £949 to just over £888.

However, there are no price cuts on the MacBook Air or Pro and the price of the Apple favourite the iPhone remains unchanged also.

There are savings on a range of accessories to go with Apple products, though. Some laptop bags have been reduced by up to 30 per cent.

Electronic retailers are feeling the pinch in the current economic downturn. Yesterday Currys and PC World posted half-year losses of nearly £30million.

Orange is to introduce the VAT reduction announced by the government two days earlier than most other retailers. The company announced that from Saturday all prices on handsets will be reduced in line with the 2.5 per cent VAT cut.
